A New Home in Brazil
I just got the keys for my apartment in Brazil. I rented a recently renovated studio for 1,900 Brazilian Reals. That’s $1,055 for the month in USD or $35 a day! This is much better than the $150/day hotel I was in that was small and older. I have high-speed internet, a full-size fridge, new queen sized mattress and dark leather couches to lounge on. The best part is the location; I’m only 200 feet to Copacabana beach!
Right now its winter in Brazil but the temperature is a perfect 78 degrees. It feels exactly like San Diego weather, plus it’s a clear, beautiful day. Day before yesterday, I ate at a “per kilo” restaurant for lunch that charges you by the weight of what you eat at the buffet. The grilled meat was tender and tasted amazing. They had a special for like 250 grams but I ended up eating over 650 grams, lol. Also, the fresh pineapple and watermelon was sweet, juicy and really hit the spot.
I’ve also eaten at Subway here. Everything looks the same until you eat it. The pickles are not the usual pickle taste; they’ve been distilled in some really sour tasting vinegar or something odd. The other peculiarity is the steak meat at Subway. It tastes more like beef jerky than regular meat. For me it tastes awesome, but for others, it might not be your #1 choice.
Yesterday I spent the day on the beach, watching the people having fun in the water and getting a tan. I rented a beach chair and had ice cold beer dropped to me every so often. This city is addicting, where else can you have your own personal waiter, taking great care of you for $2 a beer, while the girls around you sunbathe topless?

Denys,
I wasn’t talking about girls face down with their tops untied. I was talking about girls laying on their backs with their tops off. There were girls on both sides of me that were truly topless. I was in front of the Otheron Hotel on the Copacabana beach. Based on my research at http://ipanema.com/citytour/ipanema.htm I see that women have been going topless since the 80′s in Rio.

While topless sunbathing is rare in Rio, it’s not completely unheard of — especially across from the Othon. Moreover, yesterday I was laying out in Ipanema, Posto 9 and there was a topless girl there. Usually they’re Western Europeans and not locals, and it’s not a big deal in any case.

I’m having a hard time finding the pics of the “beach sites” you described. They aren’t on this post and they aren’t in the photo gallery. Time to share the sights cousin!
We just got back from a week on the beach @ St. George Island FL, so I’m very jealous that you are able to spend a whole month on the beach. And what a deal. Have a cold one for those of us back here in the USA!

Hi Jason, can you tell me how you rented your apartment in Rio? Did you reserve it online or did you find it when you got there?
Thanks in advance for the tip!

Hey David,
I got it when I got there. After some digging I found the best agency in Rio. The name is Amerioca and their website is http://www.amerioca.net/ it is owned by a Western expat and his business partner Ken. They can not only help you get a killer deal on a pad but also give you tours of anything you want to see while there. I highly recommend them for price and service. The best guys in Rio.
Enjoy,
