Brazil – Initial Reaction

View-of-Copacabana

I woke from a deep sleep to the sound of my plane’s wheels screeching on the tarmac of Rio de Janeiro’s international airport. Peering out the window I could see that we had landed on a small strip of land that jutted out into the sea.  It was early in the morning, before the sunrise, and there was fog partially obstructing a view of luscious green mountains in the distance. It looked like a tropical San Francisco!

I was thrilled to be here. Rio’s airport is gigantic, likely the largest I’ve ever been to. After baggage and customs I stepped outside and grabbed a taxi.  On the ride to my Copacabana hotel I passed through two large underground tunnels and smiled broadly when I saw the glistening sandy white beach.

The views out the taxi window were amazing. Rio has mountains with green luscious hills leading up to huge rock formations which lead down to hundreds of highrises encircling the beaches. Natural beauty is everywhere with a modern big city flair. This is one hip and unique place. The beaches are loaded with joggers, swimmers, kayakers, windsurfers, bathing beauties, vendors and enough rental lawn chairs to accommodate the whole world. As the waves crash it’s immediately apparent that surfing or boogie boarding would be a blast here; the waves are huge!

I’m now sitting on the beach, enjoying a freshly cut open coconut and drinking the juice inside while watching all the activity for $1.25. Good times. More soon…

Jason, two words Caipirinha (native drink) and Feijoada (Brazlian pork & black bean stew). Also, ‘Chop’ is local beer that’s been put through a series of cold metalic tubes to make extra refreshing . . .

    Enjoy!

Good tip Ang..”caipirinha and feijoada”, don’t forget also “churrasco” if you are a meat lover.
The word for beer is “Chopp” that means draft beer. The pronunciation is like “Show” removing the “w” and adding the “p”.
Jason Welcome to Brazil (better get used to “Brasil” with an “S”).
Besides all the turisc places you’ll find all the information in Portuguese, English, and some other languages. If you have a chance stop by at “Carioca da Gema”, it’s a place where you can enjoy some beer, dinner or appetizers. It’s located in Rio downtown, so I’d recomend you to take a taxi there if you are not with a local. The fun starts latter in the evening after 9 or 10 pm. You can experience what is good music and what the Rio natives called ‘cariocas” like to hear to or to dance to. The place is located downtown Rio, in an area where I’d not recommend a couple of years ago, but the are has been going thru recent renovation. A taxi can leave you right at the door and that area of down is now safe, some other are not, so I don’t recomend you to walk downtown alone at night. Enjoy.
