Brazil – Initial Reaction
I woke from a deep sleep to the sound of my plane’s wheels screeching on the tarmac of Rio de Janeiro’s international airport. Peering out the window I could see that we had landed on a small strip of land that jutted out into the sea. It was early in the morning, before the sunrise, and there was fog partially obstructing a view of luscious green mountains in the distance. It looked like a tropical San Francisco!
I was thrilled to be here. Rio’s airport is gigantic, likely the largest I’ve ever been to. After baggage and customs I stepped outside and grabbed a taxi. On the ride to my Copacabana hotel I passed through two large underground tunnels and smiled broadly when I saw the glistening sandy white beach.
The views out the taxi window were amazing. Rio has mountains with green luscious hills leading up to huge rock formations which lead down to hundreds of highrises encircling the beaches. Natural beauty is everywhere with a modern big city flair. This is one hip and unique place. The beaches are loaded with joggers, swimmers, kayakers, windsurfers, bathing beauties, vendors and enough rental lawn chairs to accommodate the whole world. As the waves crash it’s immediately apparent that surfing or boogie boarding would be a blast here; the waves are huge!
I’m now sitting on the beach, enjoying a freshly cut open coconut and drinking the juice inside while watching all the activity for $1.25. Good times. More soon…
