Brazilian Beer Contest 2009!

Written By: FOXY on August 16, 2009 3 Comments

brazilian-beersI love to sample different beers wherever I go.  I consider myself a beer connoisseur but in reality I really just know what I like.  Some of my favorite beers from America are homebrews and smaller micro breweries like Michigan’s Bells that makes  Oberon Ale.

So you might be wondering, what’s up with the beer scene in Brazil; how do their beers compare?

Well first off, I had to do a beer run.  I went to a local market and bought every single different type of beer they carried!  Apparently beer taste tests are reserved for the elite or something based on the envy of the Brazilian guy behind me in line.  Even the checkout girl looked miffed, but that was likely because she had to individually ring up all those bottles by typing in the UPC codes!

I got my goods all bagged up and headed home.  After cracking open the first one I almost dropped the bottle.  What an odd dark beer I had opened.  It’s called Antarctica and like the name sounds, it truly tasted that foreign to me in my mouth.  It’s a heavy dark beer with a rich molasses flavor and it quickly became overpowering.  It had hints of bitter mixed with that overwhelming sweet taste; like nothing I’ve ever sampled.  Kids would love it; they’d think it was a new kind of candy.  It’s not a beer I could have two of in a row but it was a unique experience.

The next one, Bavaria Premium, is a lager style beer. Nothing special here, it tastes just like an American industrial beer complex style watered down “garbage in a can” beers.

For my money, I enjoy unique and balanced flavors in my beer.  I’m hoping some of the other Brazilian brands will come through.  We’ll have to wait and see.  For my family in Michigan reading this, crack open an Oberon or local microbrew and enjoy it for me.   For everyone else, go grab a Delirium Tremens (a Belgium white) or any Hefeweizen with a slice of orange.  I wish I was there to enjoy it with you.

If you’d like to try the real beer Brazilians drink try Antarctica (not the black beer), Brahma, and Skol. They are not premium beers but this is what makes the bulk of beer consuption in Brazil. Bohemia is considered more upscale and not popular all around the country. Draft beer is also very popular for the same brands. These brands are all merged today and produced by Ambev. Ambev also merged with Interbrew in Belgium as Inbev now the owners of Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Hi Jason. You are a “natural” at food writing. I’d like to read more of your beer reviews. Can’t drink much of the beautiful stuff any more but reading your descriptions is a good substitute.
    Write more…
