Livin’ Large in Bali, Indonesia

Written By: FOXY on October 2, 2009 9 Comments

I’m in Asia and I’m stoked, but it did take me a really long time to get here.  After four different airlines and six flights I’m finally in Bali.  The trip started at the Iguacu Falls in Brazil on a two hour TAM flight to Rio de Janeiro.  From there I flew to Panama City, Panama on a seven hour COPA flight where I spent the night at an airport hotel typically used by flight crews.  The next morning I woke up and jumped on a five hour Spirit Airlines flight to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I tried to quickly get through US Customs and Imigration.  At Imigration I was flagged for secondary inspection where I had one of my bags searched while I had to explain to two different agents, three different times what I do for a living as quickly as possible before they wished me a happy journey.  From there I had twenty minutes to hurry to the gate for my five hour flight to Los Angeles, again on Spirit.

Once at LAX I had another fast transfer deadline I needed to make.  I arrived with only two hours to pickup my bags, and walk outside from terminal 4 all the way to the international terminal at the other end where I needed to get checked in as fast as possible due to international check-in requirements.  I made it to the China Airlines check-in desk after nearly running there with my three bags in tote only to find a massive 250+ people line.  After an hour waiting, I luckily got everything squared away and headed to the gate.

After a very long 13 1/2 hour flight over the pacific ocean I landed in Taipei, Taiwan where I had a three hour layover and then the final 5 hour flight to Bali.

01Once in Bali, I quickly took a cab to my hotel, 100 Sunset, in Kuta, Bali and got checked in. Right away I took a shower and then phoned down to have my pre-arranged massage therapist come up to give me an hour long, badly needed, massage for $15!  Her strong hands worked me good and nearly put me to sleep.  Just what I needed after the brutal 37 1/2 hours of total airtime.

002For $85 USD per night I’m very happy with my new home here.  This hotel is a small boutique hotel and has a friendly staff with awesome rooms.  I’ve been doing a lot of work since I’ve been here and will be mainly working for this next week before I do any exploring here in Bali.

003So far, my initial reaction of Bali is one of wonder.  Even the airport was cool, it had a shrine in the middle of it with water pools and religious statues!  The city is bustling but beautiful and the people are all smiles.  So far the prices have been extremely low and I’m really enjoying my time here.  I can’t wait to venture out to the beach, see the night life, explore the artistic mountain areas and rent a motorcycle to ride all the way around the island.

More soon… First I have to get some work done…

What a long travel ordeal. That will probably be the worst/longest you’ll have to suffer through. Everybody will tell you to be super careful on the motorcycle. The traffic is horrible as you can see. That said, what a great way to see things. I hope you’ll stay someplace with an outdoor bath/shower at some point. They are great. Have a ball in Kuta!

    HI there,
So glad you made it to Bali. My friend’s husband just left there today. He was fishing everyday. If he has any tips, I’ll send them on. I cannot wait to see your photos of Bali since I’ve never been there and it seems wonderful. Have a great time! Also, make sure to fill us in on the food!

    Hi Jason,

Wow Jason… what a trip to get to Bali!!! I’m not sure I could handle that (but, of course, I’d like the chance to try! LOL).

That’s an amazing room and I can’t wait to read more after you’ve been exploring.

    Best regards,

Hi: new email address. A lot of fabric comes from Bali for quilting. Maybe you will see how it is made. It is cotton and a lot of shirts are made of that material also. Can’t wait to hear more about your experiences. love to you. Aunt Mary Ann
